Murcia is often referred to as "Europe's Orchard" because its main economic activity is the agriculture and exportation of fruits (mainly lemons and oranges) to the rest of Europe.
However, it's also well known throughout the world for its excellent wines of Murcia, specially the reds from DO Jumilla.
Murcia has three designations of origin, all concentrated in the north of the autonomous community.
The region is home to Yecla and Bullas, but Jumilla is where the most quality expressions of the wine are produced.
Other grapes grown and often blended with Monastrell are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
The few white wines are made from Macabeo, Airen and Merseguera. Rosado and dessert styles are also produced.
